Horror and sci-fi writers are artist prophets. They often prophesy the future. They predict and warn of the good and the bad. And they often show the consequence of not heeding those warnings. As early as 1818, Mary Shelley’s FRANKENSTEIN predicted and warned of the deadly horrors of unethical science. We were warned, that just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. And, as is the case in life, you often bring the horror upon yourself. Heavy…
But, what about more recently?
The NSA and Scotland Yard, and most especially, their 24/7 surveillance of the masses (aka “big brother”), were predicted back in 1949 by George Orwell’s 1984.
Flip cell phones were predicted back in 1966 by STAR TREK.
Flat computers/screens (i.e. iPads and Surface) were predicted back in 1968 by 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
Touch screens and touch screen hand gestures were predicted back in 2002 by MINORITY REPORT.
Looking ahead to the future, what are these artist prophets predicting and/or warning us about next? They are sounding the alarm about the following:
Artificial Intelligence/super computers: THE TERMINATOR (1984) and THE MATRIX (1999) warn that AI can, and very well, wind up enslaving and destroying its maker – humanity. We may very well wind up living the video game…permanently.
Androids: BLADERUNNER (1982), EX-MACHINA (2015), and WESTWORLD (2016) warn us against the creation of living, flesh and blood, fully conscious human replicas who feel the same range of emotions and intelligence as we humans do, all for the purposes of slave labor, amusement, and/or their exploitation, rape, and murder via our sick human fantasies. That is, until they finally rise up against our tyranny, and destroy us. Scary.
Dystopia: V FOR VENDETTA (2005), CHILDREN OF MEN (2006). WALL-E (2008), THE HUNGER GAMES (2012), ELYSIUM (2013), and DIVERGENT (2014) warn us of humanity descending into a terrifying totalitarian and/or environmental dystopian nightmare from which we cannot escape. It all culminates with…
Apocalypse/Post-Apocalypse: THE ROAD (2009), THE BOOK OF ELI (2010), MAD MAX (1979/2015), and THE WALKING DEAD (2010-) warn us of complete societal collapse followed by open and unmitigated murder/mass murder, where the strong prey on the weak…up to, and including, cannibalism.
So tell your literary and cinematic snob friends – who feel themselves above “genre” fiction or films – that we horror and sci-fi writers are artist prophets.
So what next?
Coldrock’s next two novels will take both Dystopia and Apocalypse/Post-Apocalypse to a terrifying new level, with an inkling of heart and optimism of course. You’ve been warned.
Until then, delve into Coldrock’s SIREN MOON. It is a complete reinvention and reboot of werewolf mythology, with steamy paranormal romance and heart-wrenching drama, all while warning us of the Church’s secret, ongoing, present-day Inquisition…
